Pilates was invented and brought to the United States by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. The system, which includes mat work as well as several machines designed by Pilates, is a distillation of his study of yoga, dance, gymnastics and martial arts. He created a series of movements that are designed to create the source for graceful, strong, and controlled physicality.

If you have ever seen a Bob Fosse dancer you have seen the essence of Pilates based movement. His system,, which was originally called Contrology, starts with the center and breathing. All of the exercises work from this core. They are almost all lying down or sitting, so that alignment and multi-dimensional movement can be developed without the complication of vertical weight bearing. Thus the mind’s focus can be strengthened and the connection between thought and action can be intentional rather than habitual. Flexibility is the basis for strength, and a uniformly developed musculature is necessary for true flexibility. Pilates emphasizes the need for constant stretching and relaxing while working on the actual power of the muscles. The goal is a cat-like natural body: toned, energetic and graceful.

Pilates is an excellent tool for rehabilitation. The reformer was designed with injured soldiers in mind. It employs a series of springs, a moving platform and straps on pulleys to support and challenge the body. In this way it is useful for all sorts of injuries and disabilities as well as a perfect format for correcting problematic movement and misalignment. Many of Martha Grahm’s dancers went to Joseph Pilates as well as many circus performers.

A body that is strong will be more energetic. A body that is evenly strong as well as flexible will have less pressure on the spine and other joints. These all are great enhancers of well being and the reduction of stress.
